17. Inhibited or passively avoidant when exposed to potentially stressful situations

Definition Absent Very Mild Mild Moderate Severe
Copes with stress poorly, evidenced passively such as shutting down, avoidance, withdrawal, displacement activity such as avoidant sniffing and/or quitting as a response to stress
  • No evidence of inhibited behavior when exposed to potentially stressful situations. Remains relaxed
  • In a few isolated instances, becomes very mildly inhibited in response to stress
  • Signs may include:
    1. very mildly slowing down
    2. short periods of avoidance sniffing
    3. very mild tongue flicking
    4. responds readily to encouragement
    5. does not interfere with its ability to work or continue responding to handler
  • Recovers quickly
  • Occasionally becomes mildly inhibited in response to stress. The dog mildly internalizes stress
  • Signs may include:
    1. mildly slowing down and mild withdrawing
    2. mild panting
    3. longer periods of avoidance sniffing
    4. other avoidant responses
    5. mild tongue flicking
    6. does not interfere with its ability to work or continue responding to handler
  • Recovers reasonably quickly with encouragement or allowing time to process
  • Becomes moderately inhibited in response to stress. The dog moderately internalizes stress
  • Signs may include:
    1. moderately slowing down and withdrawing
    2. moderate panting
    3. prolonged periods of avoidance sniffing
    4. other avoidant responses
    5. may interfere with ability to work
  • May not be able to continue responding to handler despite support and encouragement and/or allowing a short time to process
  • Becomes severely inhibited in response to stress. The dog severely internalizes stress
  • Signs may include:
    1. shutting down
    2. severely withdrawing
    3. prolonged and/or severe panting
    4. prolonged periods of moderate tongue flicking
    5. avoidance sniffing and/or other avoidant responses
    6. inability to respond to handler
  • Dog is unable to work or continue responding to handler despite support and encouragement and/or allowing a short time to process
